Job Description: Boone Church of Christ, Assistant Minister for Campus & Youth

The Boone Church of Christ is seeking to hire an assistant minister whose primary responsibilities will be the expansion of our existing college and youth ministries. The Boone Church of Christ is an established church with a full time minister, elders, deacons and an active outreach ministry. One of those ministries is the campus ministry at the nearby Appalachian State University which has a student population of over 15,000. Job qualifications and responsibilities are listed below.

Responsibilities
• Teach college and teen age classes
• Plan and lead ministry activities for college, teenage students
• Deliver sermons occasionally
• Manage ministry funds responsibly
• Act as primary contact with Appalachian State University Office of Student
Development
• Maintain the ministry website

Qualifications
• Required
o Christian young man who is mature in the faith
o Willing to work under the oversight of the elders
o Willing to work as a part of the ministry team
o Good communications skills – ability to express himself clearly, both one on
one and in group settings as well as in writing
o Good organizational skills
o Eagerness to serve God through working with youth and college age young
people
o Desire to build personal relationships with each student
o Self-motivated
o Willing to attend all church services
o Member of the Church of Christ

• Preferred
o 3-5 years experience as a campus/youth minister
o Ministry degree from a Christian University
o Married to a Christian woman who is supportive of her husband’s ministry
o Visionary and creative
o Computer skills appropriate for the ministry (Word processing, presentations,
communications, etc.)
o Enjoys outdoor activities

Goals/Objectives
• Through the efforts of the assistant minister, the church will grow spiritually and numerically.
• Bring individuals to Christ through example, teaching, and encouragement
• Encourage the students in their relationship with Christ
• Increase the effectiveness of the existing campus outreach ministry
• Implement programs and activities that will encourage strong relationships among
students, making sure that all students are included
• Implement church programs and activities that will encourage strong relationships
among students and other church members
• Become involved in individual Bible studies
• Develop activities to reach families in the community
• Facilitate the spiritual growth of students and their willingness and ability to take
an active role in the local church

Information about the Church and Region

The Boone Church of Christ was established during the early 1950s, and the campus ministry has been active since the 1970s. The church currently has about 70 members from the community plus 25 college students. “Mountaineers for Christ” (the name of the campus organization) has been blessed with a long history of students who are now active members in churches across the country including several in official ministry positions. The church has one full-time minister, three elders, and five deacons. The current church building was completed in 1997; this facility is appropriate for conducting current ministry activities and can be expanded to accommodate a growing ministry. Boone, NC, is located in the Appalachian Mountains of Northwest North Carolina. It has a thriving economy largely based on the university and tourism. Skiing, hiking, bikingn and other outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant across the region. In 2005,Boone was recognized by Adventure Sports Magazine as one of four “ultimate outdoor adventure destinations” in North America along with Durango, CO, Bend, OR, and North Vancouver, BC. Summers in Boone are pleasant with an average high in the 70s; however, winters are rather cold with 30” average total snowfall (80” on nearby mountaintops).

Appalachian State University is a comprehensive state university with over 15,000 students. The university is consistently recognized among the top 10 “Southern Regional Universities” offering nearly 250 undergraduate academic majors and over 100 graduate programs. Athletic programs compete at the NCAA Division I level; ASU’s football team is the 2005 and 2006 NCAA Division I FCS National Football Champions.
